Lodging Alternatives

There are many reasons for travelers to consider apartment rentals or other lodging alternatives, but we tend to recommend hotel suites instead. Why? Unfortunately, apartment rental scams in Montréal are prevalent—especially when booked online. In some published reports, potential guests have arrived to find that the apartment they rented doesn’t exist, or that they’re paying for an illegal sublet. (Note: Never wire money to an individual’s account.)

There are, however, reputable providers of short- and long-term rentals; our favorites are below.

Loft and Apartment Rentals

Fully furnished lofts—some with closed bedrooms—and apartments are available through these esteemed companies:

Habitation du Vieux Montréal.

Habitation du Vieux Montréal rents out five apartments in one building in the Old Port on St. Laurent Boulevard at the corner of St. Paul. Completely independent, each unit is fully equipped—from kitchen to bathroom to bedding. Expect street noise at night in the summer. Lofts du Vieux-Port.

Lofts du Vieux-Port has 24 apartment-style lofts scattered throughout the Old Port. The lofts are chic and sexy, with a mix of antiques and modern design, attracting film people, sports stars, and others who like the room-service option and laundry service. Auberge Alternative.

Exposed stone walls and wild colors make for cheery dorms, while live musical performances keep the hostel’s common room and open kitchen hopping. If you’re willing to climb the steep staircase and forego air-conditioning, you can get a very basic but clean room for C$75 or a dorm bed with locker for as little as C$25. Families vie for the new $85 room with a bunk bed and a double bed. Student Housing

McGill Student Apartments.

From mid-May to mid-August, backpackers and families stay in these apartments in a former hotel that’s off the McGill campus. Smug budget travelers congratulate themselves for finding this gem. Use of the school’s swimming pool, and gym facilities costs a little bit extra. The university cafeteria is open during the week, serving breakfast and lunch. B&Bs

Some B&Bs are off the grid. They prefer to remain private and hush-hush. To find them, simply walk the streets of the Village, specifically rues St-Andre, St-Christophe, and St-Timothée, below rue Sherbrooke. Or, ask any of the friendly locals, who’ll be more than glad to point you in the direction of their friend’s B&B.
